Distressables

by Tim Holtz

reviewed by Tracey Eller

Ever had an urge to alter a pocket watch?! You will after you read this book! Distressables by Tim Holtz a gotta-have for all altered artists, distressing fanatics and general Tim groupies! I made the mistake of taking it along to kill time at my daughters' dress rehearsal the other day. I got so engrossed in the book that I barely got the camera out in time to catch my oldest's turn on stage. Oops! Needless to say, I like the book. It's full of fresh content, well laid out, easy to follow, and bursting with tips and tricks in addition to the fun projects.

I've heard a lot of comments since Distressables was released that it might be too similar to his DVD and you don't need both. Not the case!! Tim is much too talented an artist to repeat himself. While he uses some of the same products in both the DVD and book such as distress inks and alcohol inks, the techniques and projects are all entirely new for the book.

As in the DVD, the majority of the examples are not scrapbook, but all of the techniques are easily adaptable to your scrapbook pages. He plays with cards, canvas, jewelry, frames and keepsake boxes. Tim has a wonderful way of making the complicated look easy. He shows us step by step how to add the small touches that make the difference between the good and the fabulous. He touches on layering, collage, transfers, laminating, glazing and of course... distressing!
